BORONGAN CITY, Eastern Samar – More and more tourists are now magnetized to the fantastic waves of Calicoan, Guiuan, as shown by the number of people who flew to the white beach for the 4th Eastern Samar Crown Competition, October 8-10.

Speaking before a host of local and foreign tourists during the opening ceremonies yesterday, Mayor Annaliz Kwan expressed her warm welcome as she proudly enumerated the significant events in the history of her town which are additional icing to Calicoan as a tourist destination.

She stressed that Guiuan will always be a part of the country’s history, as she recalled Magellan’s discovery in 1521. Apparently she proudly cited that the people of her town had already manifested early signs of becoming hosts to future tourists when they afforded the Spaniards with lavish native foods and hospitality.

Today, the people of Guiuan do not only offer their good manners and hospitable behaviors; they also share the beautiful nature God has lovingly showered them with. Their lush and vast splashing waters in Calicoan invites as well a perfect surfing ground for all.

With the 28 officially registered competitors from Baler, Quezon, La Union, Daet, Siargao and Eastern Samar’s, the lady mayor can truly tells herself that the roaring waves of Calicoan are never the same. The waves that seemed to hurl angrily the shores may now be a friendly host to surfers.

Asked what makes the Calicoan surfing ground different from the others, Bryan Lassiter, President of Eastern Samar’s Surfriders Club said that the ground is long and wide that surfers have a long array of waves at their peak. In other grounds, they have to wait for the others to vacate the best point of the waves.

This years Surfing Competition has most of the major sponsors: Ubicon System Philippines, a company from Korea, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes, Philippine Toursim Authority, Office of the Presidential Assistant for Visayas, Region 8 Tourism Department, The Surf Camp, Fluid Surf and the Eastern Samar’s Provincial Government Unit.

Yesterday’s Opening Ceremony was fully covered by the provincial and regional media headed by the Philippine Information Agency, Regional Office 8.

BIG RESORT TO RISE ON CALICOAN ISLAND

Philippine Daily Inquirer

September 2, 2007
GUIUAN, EASTERN SAMAR — A multimillion-dollar beach resort would soon rise on Calicoan Island, which is envisioned as the surfing capital in Eastern Visayas.

Tim Brumlik, American resort developer and director of the Calicoan Island Resort Development Corp. (CIRDC), said the project would cost around $160 million.

Brumlik said construction work on the resort would start in January next year and would take over two years to finish.

CIRDC’s proposed 11-hectare resort would be located at the middle beach of the 1,600-hectare Calicoan Island, he said.

Douglas Ramsey, the architect who designed the project, said the eight-story hotel would be shaped like a pyramid and would have outdoor balconies.

Ramsey said the project would be a series of complexes with the condominium hotel as the main complex.

Aside from the condominium hotel, the resort would also have 20 private villas and a two-hectare swimming pool complex, he said.

The other features would include a health spa with casino component, medical facility for cosmetic surgery, stabilization unit, heliport, and a sports complex.

Brumlik said the investors of their Philippine corporation included himself and a few Europeans.

Lawyer Manuel Go, owner of the land to be occupied by CIRDC’s resort hotel, said a group of Korean investors would also set up a 500-room luxury hotel at the south beach of Calicoan Island.

Go also explained that his company does not have any involvement in the American and Korean business ventures, except to provide the site for the projects.

“We develop land and then find the people that do the verticals,” Go said.

Victor Domingo, presidential assistant for Eastern Visayas, said the government would be setting up infrastructure requirements for the upcoming resorts, such as a good airport, roads, power and water.

Eastern Samar Gov. Ben Evardone, some Korean businessmen, local businessmen and other government officials attended the project’s launching held recently.
