BORONGAN CITY, Eastern Samar – More and more tourists are now magnetized to the fantastic waves of Calicoan, Guiuan, as shown by the number of people who flew to the white beach for the 4th Eastern Samar Crown Competition, October 8-10.
Speaking before a host of local and foreign tourists during the opening ceremonies yesterday, Mayor Annaliz Kwan expressed her warm welcome as she proudly enumerated the significant events in the history of her town which are additional icing to Calicoan as a tourist destination.
She stressed that Guiuan will always be a part of the country’s history, as she recalled Magellan’s discovery in 1521. Apparently she proudly cited that the people of her town had already manifested early signs of becoming hosts to future tourists when they afforded the Spaniards with lavish native foods and hospitality.
Today, the people of Guiuan do not only offer their good manners and hospitable behaviors; they also share the beautiful nature God has lovingly showered them with. Their lush and vast splashing waters in Calicoan invites as well a perfect surfing ground for all.
With the 28 officially registered competitors from Baler, Quezon, La Union, Daet, Siargao and Eastern Samar’s, the lady mayor can truly tells herself that the roaring waves of Calicoan are never the same. The waves that seemed to hurl angrily the shores may now be a friendly host to surfers.
Asked what makes the Calicoan surfing ground different from the others, Bryan Lassiter, President of Eastern Samar’s Surfriders Club said that the ground is long and wide that surfers have a long array of waves at their peak. In other grounds, they have to wait for the others to vacate the best point of the waves.
This years Surfing Competition has most of the major sponsors: Ubicon System Philippines, a company from Korea, Philippine Charity Sweepstakes, Philippine Toursim Authority, Office of the Presidential Assistant for Visayas, Region 8 Tourism Department, The Surf Camp, Fluid Surf and the Eastern Samar’s Provincial Government Unit.
Yesterday’s Opening Ceremony was fully covered by the provincial and regional media headed by the Philippine Information Agency, Regional Office 8.
